Java Chip Smoothie

Java Chip Smoothie

We are finally having some nicer/warmer weather!!! I’m so excited to be spending the days outside with my kids burning off some energy! I know it’s not quite hot enough for a cold, refreshing smoothie but that’s not stopping me! Smoothie weather is right around the corner and I’m ready for it! In the smoothie world, it just doesn’t get healthier than this Java Chip Smoothie. It’s naturally gluten-free and paleo!

Since this smoothie is healthy for you it has a few ingredients that might surprise you.

I usually make this with coconut milk, unfortunately, when I pulled mine out of the fridge it was a few days past sour. So I used almond milk instead. I prefer coconut milk however, either one will work and taste delicious!

I add chilled (strong!) coffee to my smoothie for a little afternoon kick! You can use caffeine free if you wish or leave it out entirely. I omit the coffee if I’m making this for my kids… no extra caffeine needed there! Omitting the coffee turns this into a Chocolate Chip Smoothie instead of Java Chip.

I add a handful of spinach because I always try to sneak spinach into my diet as much as possible! (Kale would also work!) You can’t taste it at all but it makes your smoothie extra healthy!

You can use a fresh banana if you want but a frozen banana will make your smoothie creamier and keep it cold!

Maple Syrup is used as a sweetener. Honey can be used instead. I used to add yogurt to my smoothies as a sweetener but then I actually read the label and realized there were 33 grams of sugar per serving!!!!

Almond butter gives this smoothie a kick of protein! You can use any type of nut butter that you wish. (Just keep in mind that peanut butter isn’t paleo).

Cocoa Powder and chocolate chips are what gives this smoothie its chocolaty goodness! In my opinion, chocolate makes everything better! In order to keep this as healthy as possible, I used dark chocolate chips. Enjoy Life brand is also the most allergy-friendly brand of chocolate chips that I know about. They are dairy, nut, soy, and gluten-free.

Ice cubes: to make it cold. I suppose if you wanted you could freeze your coffee into cubes and use those in place of the ice cubes. I actually just thought of that as I was typing and will have to give that a try in the future.
